I was granted complimentary access to Eating These Foods Makes Me… by Kalifa Rodriguez as part of my participation in a blog tour for this title with Goddess Fish Promotions. Thank you to all involved in affording me this opportunity! My thoughts are my own and my review is honset.

Eating These Foods Makes Me… is a beautifully illustration picture book that pairs brief yet clear statements about dietary health with colourful artwork and photo collages to teach kids about healthy eating. It covers all sorts of foods and why each category is an important part of a balanced diet. I’m not an expert in nutrition, so I can’t verify how current the accuracy of the claims made are, but this all sounds right to someone who was raised by a grandmother who read all the health magazines she could get her hands on.

After the short run of story pages there are a few suggested lesson activities which could be implemented at home, in the classroom, or in a daycare/day home situaiton. I absolutely applaud those inclusions!

My only critiques are that the “story” part (I can’t think of a better word at the moment but this isn’t fiction with a plot) is very short, and I doubt this book will convince more than half of all “picky eater” kids to eat different things. Counting both sides of full page spreads, it’s 22 pages, but those contain 10 sentences and a list of “I am” statements. This is a good length as an introduction to the lessons included, but probably not long enough for general “storytime” on its own. As for the promises set by the questions asked in the synopsis, this book is appealing to a child’s desire to understand their world and provides some fun arts and crafts sort of activities to solidify and expand on the knowledge presented. It doesn’t offer tools for teachers and caregivers when the “picky eater” child has sensory issues or allergy/illness-related trauma getting in the way of branching out.
