Northern Wrath by Thilde Kold Holdt – 5 Star Book Review

Posted on September 13, 2021 By Jenna No Comments on Northern Wrath by Thilde Kold Holdt – 5 Star Book Review

Following in the steps of Neil Gaiman & Joanne Harris, the author expertly weaves Norse myths and compelling characters into this fierce, magical epic fantasy.

I picked up Northern Wrath because a book club I’m in plans to buddy read the eARC of book two in October, and I’m so glad I did!

Following in the steps of Neil Gaiman & Joanne Harris, the author expertly weaves Norse myths and compelling characters into this fierce, magical epic fantasy.

A dead man, walking between the worlds, foresees the end of the gods.

A survivor searching for a weapon releases a demon from fiery Muspelheim.

A village is slaughtered by Christians, and revenge must be taken.

The bonds between the gods and Midgard are weakening. It is up to Hilda, Ragnar, their tribesmen Einer and Finn, the chief’s wife Siv and Tyra, her adopted daughter, to fight to save the old ways from dying out, and to save their gods in the process.

I picked up Northern Wrath because a book club I’m in plans to buddy read the eARC of book two in October, and I’m so glad I did! This is a Norse flavoured epic fantasy unlike any I’ve ever read before. An origin story of sorts for many players in the Norse pantheon, this book follows a war between Northerners and Southerners driven by the influence of Christians and their infusion of religion from afar.

Hilda was by far my favourite character, not only because she herself is such an interesting onion of complicated layers, but because the most fascinating bits of world-building revealed in this book are tied to her story. I loved how her supernatural connections and abilities were handled. Especially the snow fox that no one else can see! (Seriously, this made me want a pet fox, even though I’ve heard how much they make everything else smell like fox.)

This book dives so deep into Norse mythology and lore, far beyond familiar faces like Loki, Oden, and Oden’s famous pair of ravens, into lesser-known and even newly invented by inspired elements that make this book truly unique. I haven’t read something this unique and yet so deeply steeped in well-researched Nordic culture and ancient religion since the early Iron Druid books, and this one has the bonus charm of being a truly epic historical fantasy with scope and creativity to rival properties like A Song of Ice and Fire.

I’m so excited to keep reading this trilogy, and I can’t wait for buddy read time to start on October 1st. If you’re into Norse mythology and epic fantasy, you need to read this trilogy!
