How did you choose the perfect illustrator for your book?

Nurse Mommy was published through Mascot Books, and they made the entire publication process so easy for me as a first time author. Part of that process was providing me with a long list of very talented illustrators and examples of their work. I looked through all of them and narrowed down to four who illustrated some mock-ups of the characters from Nurse Mommy. As soon as I saw Vanessa’s illustration of the family in Nurse Mommy, (my family!) I knew that she needed to be the one to illustrate the entire book. She really captured the style I was hoping for, and the illustrations look so much like my family that when my son first saw the book he pointed at the characters and said “Mommy, Daddy, Bo!” Our hound dog, Bo, might have been my favorite part of the entire book! I’m so amazed by how the entire book turned out. I’m proud of myself for writing a sweet story, but in my opinion Vanessa is the reason this book comes to life. Her attention to detail, especially in regards to the patients in the book, is such a reflection on how much work into Nurse Mommy. I will forever be grateful! I have another book idea that I’ve been tossing around and may start working on soon. I know with absolute certainty if I’m able to publish another book I will use Vanessa again!

My Review

My Rating: 5 Stars
Consider liking my review on Goodreads.

I was granted complimentary access to Nurse Mommy as part of my participation in a blog tour for this title through iRead Book Tours. Thank you to all involved in affording me this opportunity! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.

Nurse Mommy is a beautifully illustrated story in verse about why this mom, who’s a nurse, has to go to work. Dad is telling their little boy about all the good things Mommy does at work all night, how she thinks of them on her break, and how she can’t wait to get back home to them. My only question is when does this poor woman sleep? Daddy makes a comment about each parent taking care of the child while the other is away, coinciding with pictures of Daddy with Baby at 7:30pm and Mommy with baby at 7:30am and I got the impression that Daddy has a day job while Mommy works overnight. So seriously, when does Mommy sleep? Sequel? (Only partly kidding.)

This is a great book for families trying to explain shift working parents to their kids.

I don’t sleep…kidding! I’m lucky that I can usually work weekends so my husband can be with the kids while I get a nap! When I do have to work during the weekdays my babies’ grandparents are so helpful so I can rest a little. We’re lucky-I do know some nurses who only can nap when their kids nap after work!
