In this bighearted book, the real story of a young boy with deafness in his ears is aided by his mother and teachers in navigating new school experiences. Mickey is just like everyone else, except he wears cochlear implants and has to do things just a little differently than most. This charming tale reminds us that we can all find happiness if we lean on and support each other.

My Review

My Rating: 4 Stars
Consider “liking” my review on Goodreads.

I was granted a complimentary review copy of Mickey on the Move as part of my participation in the blog tour for this title with iRead Book Tours. Thank you to all involved in affording me this opportunity! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.

Mickey on the Movie is the story of Mickey, a sixth-grade student with bilateral cochlear implants, who is settling in at a new school. As Mickey, his mother, his teachers, and his new friends go through the first week of the new school year, Mickey’s disability and aids are explained in a positive and matter-of-fact way. We learn that he was born profoundly deaf, other hearing devices such as traditional hearing aids didn’t help, and that he uses cochlear implants. How these implants work and what his functional hearing is like (particularly how it differs from unimpaired hearing and how certain conditions such as noisy environments are not ideal) are explained in a way kids this age and a few grades younger will easily understand.

As someone who is hard of hearing and grew up maintstreamed, I absolutely love the fact that a book like this exists! So many deaf/Deaf kids are going to feel seen! This book will be a touchstone for kids with auditory disabilities, particularly those who use sign language and/or cochlear implants. It will also be a very helpful resource for explaining and normalizing these things to siblings and classmates of such kids.

The illustrations are fun and colourful, but as an illustrator, I’m not as impressed with the artwork in this book as I am with the story itself. The illustrations have definitely been drawn with a kid-lit cartoony style in mind, so I wasn’t expecting perfection at all, but some of the anatomy proportions really made me look twice. Older kids and adults may take notice. This doesn’t detract from the very valuable story at all.

Every parent with deafness in the family needs to read this book with their kids. Every elementary or even middle school level teacher with a deaf student needs to introduce this to the class.
