My Review

My Rating: 5 Stars
Consider liking my review on Goodreads.

I was granted eBook access to Horsing Around by Lexi Rees as part of my participation in a blog tour for this title with Rachel’s Random Resources. Thank you to all involved in affording me this opportunity! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.

Horsing Around is an adorable activity journal for kids (and kids at heart) to log their horse riding lessons and other horsey adventures, colour pretty ponies, and learn a few more things about their favourite animals. If I had a book like this when I was an 8 year old riding my childhood pony, finally under the guidance of a professional instructor and not just my self-taught mother, I would have treasured all of the structure and information in this book!

For any parents, instructors, etc. looking for a lesson journal for their young student, I endorse this as fun, informative, and very well laid out. For any parents or well-meaning other beloved adults in the lives of horse-loving kids not in formal lessons, be aware that the vast majority of the “activities” in this book revolve around recording riding lessons and other time spent at the barn. This may be boring or even upsetting for kids who dream of lessons but haven’t had the opportunity.

About the Author

Lexi Rees was born in Scotland but now lives down south where she’s a slave to carrot obsessed gelding, a frisky mare, a dog who’s convinced he’s not been fed in a month, and a house of hungry boys.

She writes action-packed adventures and fun activity books for children.

She wrote Horsing Around in response to a predominance of pink in the existing pony book market which her own son found off-putting.

She’s passionate about developing a love of reading and writing in children and, as well as her creative writing workbook, she has an active programme of school visits and other events, is a Book PenPal for three primary schools, and runs a free online #kidsclub and newsletter which includes book recommendations and creative writing activities.

Thanks so much for taking part. You’re absolutely right this is aimed at riders – hopefully this is clear from “journal” and the blurb. It’s not just for those in formal riding school lessons tho – “self-taught mothers” are amazing instructors too and I’m a firm believer that hacking is a great way to train horse and rider. Have you seen the amazing young Kizzy and Ettie on Instagram/ FB?
