Two parents and their recently-bitten-werewolf daughter try to fit into a privileged New England society of magic aristocracy. But deadly terrors await them – ancient prophecies, remorseless magical trials, hidden conspiracies and the PTA bake sale.
When Vivian’s kindergartner, Aria, gets bitten by a werewolf, she is rapidly inducted into the hidden community of magical schools. Reeling from their sudden move, Vivian finds herself having to pick the right sacrificial dagger for Aria, keep stocked up on chew toys and play PTA politics with sirens and chthonic nymphs and people who literally can set her hair on fire.
As Vivian careens from hellhounds in the school corridors and demons at the talent show, she races to keep up with all the arcane secrets of her new society – shops only accessible by magic portal, the brutal Trials to enter high school, and the eternal inferno that is the parents’ WhatsApp group.
And looming over everything is a prophecy of doom that sounds suspiciously like it’s about Aria. Vivian might be facing the end of days, just as soon as she can get her daughter dressed and out of the door…

My Review
My Rating: 5 Stars!
Consider “liking” my review on Goodreads.
This book caught my eye on the shelf at my local mall’s Coles because someone was wise enough to place it on the shelf facing forward, showing off this catchy, gold foiled artwork and a title that makes you say “I have to know what that’s about!” When I brought it to the register, the employee grinned and said “I don’t read fantasy but I think I need to read this one.” And absolutely, yes, she does! Everyone who enjoys fantasy or cozy reads should give this one a try. This is the book that got me out of a reading slump and made me promptly look into the author and buy her other book without even reading the synopsis.
The Grimoire Grammar School Parent Teacher Association by Caitlin Rozakis is a charming, cozy, but at times very serious book about growing after trauma, figuring out who your real friends are, and finding your place in a new place. When ordinary human Vivian’s young daughter Aria is brutally attacked and changed by a werewolf, an imperfect little family of three uproot their mundane lives and find themselves living in a concealed magical town full of small town politics and mob-like old blood magic families.
Yes, it’s definitely about little Aria learning to embrace and control her wolf side, and it’s a little bit about the dad learning to emotionally support his wife who bears the brunt of the burden presented by parenting a werewolf, but it’s mostly about Vivian learning who to trust, learning how to trust herself, and learning when and how to put herself first. As a mother who did the stay at home parent thing while mine was little, it’s so relatable! You get lost in motherhood. Add in the survivor’s guilt and witness trauma Vivian carries from watching what happened to her daughter, and you’ve got a woman who no longer has an identity beyond “imperfect protector of Aria.” A year of service on the PTA at a magical school in a snobbish little town proves to be exactly what Vivian needed to find herself, but it doesn’t go anything like she expected it to.
