My Review

My Rating: 4 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Consider “liking” my review on Goodreads!

I was granted complimentary access to Hey! There are Monsters at my House! by Marlene Thalman as part of my participation in a blog our for this title with Goddess Fish Promotions. Thank you to all involved in affording me this opportunity! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.

Hey! There are Monsters at my House! is the story of a boy named Reggie, his pet cat Rufus, and their adventures around the house solving, banishing, and learning not to fear the monsters that hide in small, dark spaces. It is written in rhyming verse and accompanied by cute, bright illustrations. I can see this being a great circle time story for groups, especially if the adult reading to a group of small kids take opportunities to ask the group questions on each page. (“Do you think there’s a monster under the bed? No? What do you think it is, then?”) On the note of illustrations, though, I must comment that the black cover with the cut-out pieces gives a very different impression of the book. It looks cool, but it doesn’t set up the right expectations.

There is a fair amount of text per page, so the youngest readers/listeners may get bored before the story is over. I see this being best for younger grade school age kids, rather than toddlers and preschoolers.
