My Review

Rating: 4 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I was granted complimentary ebook access to How to Draw a Giraffe as part of my participating in a blog tour for this title with Rachel’s Random Resources. Thank you to all involved for affording me this opportunity! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.

How to Draw a Giraffe is a cute non-fiction book about giraffes for children which takes 52 pages to walk through the process of drawing a giraffe line-by-line while doling out fun giraffe facts. It’s cute! I’ve seen art books with facts before, but not one formatted quite like this.

I have mixed feelings about the fact that we only walk through a single drawing, though. On one hand, this is the most detailed, slow-paced, deconstructed drawing process instructions I’ve ever seen and I really do think this will help budding artists young and old understand and appreciate the process in a way that other how to draw books don’t achieve. On the other hand, despite the countless other cute giraffe art decorating the outskirts of the pages, this book takes 52 pages to teach one giraffe headshot.

As a fun activity, this book is great. As a source of cool giraffe facts, wonderful! I grew up with a friend who would have adored this collection of giraffe knowledge. As an art resource to come back to many times, I’m not sure this will hold up. I think it has more repeat-use value as a collection of facts.

Overall this book is cute and I recommend it to giraffe/animal loving kids who like to draw.

About the Author

Former GP surgery manager turned school librarian, Alice is mum to four not-so-small children and married to (probably) the most patient man on the planet. They live in what used to be a tumbledown cottage in the New Forest.

Alice is the double ‘Chill-with-a-Book’ award winning author of The House that Sat Down Trilogy and also How-to-Draw Giraffes – the Alice May Way.

A contributing writer and artist for Leisure Painter, the UK’s number one how-to-paint magazine, Alice is a huge advocate for the benefits of creative activities as part of an effective self-care toolkit.

She regularly speaks to clubs and groups about writing, painting and creative self-care.
