My Review

My Rating: 3 Stars

I was granted complimentary PDF access to Bunster An Easter Story by Christine Hwang Panzer as part of my participation in a blog tour for this title with iRead Book Tours. Thank you to all involved in affording me this opportunity! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.

I haven’t reviewed a board book in one of these tours before! How cute! My little girl is growing out of such short books now, so this was a bittersweet visit to the recent past.

A book at this level is meant to be read by the adult(s) to small children, so I don’t mind the loose handwriting style font. We don’t have to worry about beginner readers trying to decipher it. I will note its existence, though, in case any parents with reading difficulties are looking at this online without the ability to see the font inside.

The illustrations started out adorable and have that classic children’s book watercolour feel. The rabbits are adorable and reminiscent of other children’s stories I grew up loving like Guess How Much I Love You. As the book goes on, however, the illustrations feel less finished. It becomes clear to an artist’s eye that this was rendered in marker, not paint, and chisel nib strokes are quite obvious on rooftops and along the edges of shapes in a way that could be a stylistic choice or could be a drying marker. The human girl character who shows up in the last couple of illustrations is coloured in such pale shades that at first, in my little PDF preview on a small screen, I thought her hair wasn’t coloured at all.

The dabbing white easter bunny at the end is cute in a “How do you do, fellow kids” kind of way that small kids are never going to get but parents and older siblings can laugh at and talk about long after the toddler is done with storytime. Very cute!
