Not in the mood to dance alone, I felt the sudden urge to get some fresh air. I pushed my half-eaten plate away from me, grabbed my purse from the back of my chair, and strolled out of the marquee.
There was so much good luck all around me, and I knew I should be thankful, and I was, really, but none of it compensated for the feelings that I’d been nurturing of late for Fitz. He had loved me, and I had blown it. That was the truth of it, and no magic in the world could put that right. Not unless I wanted a visit from the Hags.
Some rogue clouds drifted over the full moon, dimming most of the natural light around me. The trucks were between me and the marquee, and I found myself in almost total darkness. I remembered Dad once told me—the dead of night, not midnight, was the time for wishes.
