Author Guest Post with Nathaniel Koszer: Latency

Sera is a LO-EC, a human who gained superpowers as an unintended side effect of a biotechnological breakthrough. Her unique abilities allowed her to survive while others like her, including her parents, were exterminated by a world government fearful of their potential.

One of the many things that make Latency, my biopunk sci-fi adventure novel, so unique is the sheer number of protagonists. The story follows six main characters, all with unique superpowers, as they find one another and unite to fight against the government that wants them exterminated. The six protagonists of Latency are Sera, Naren, Nadine, Edgar, Symon, and Victor. And while all of them have moments in the spotlight, the plot of Latency is really Sera’s story. Her desire for revenge is the inciting incident that brings all of them together and gives them a new, profoundly violent goal to work towards.

While it is only mentioned once or twice throughout the novel, Sera is actually a nickname. The characters full name is Serafina. By sheer coincidence, I also happen to work within walking distance of an Italian restaurant in downtown Manhattan that is also called Serafina. I did not know this restaurant existed when I originally wrote Latency, as I didn’t work anywhere near downtown Manhattan at the time. So when it came time to plan a little release party for Latency, I could think of no better place than the restaurant that shared the name of my character. I actually booked the reservation at the restaurant the same night I am writing this, and I look forward to a great celebratory dinner with my family. Here is the restaurant if anyone reading is interested in going: https://maps.app.goo.gl/D1Yc6MFWg5WkaHP46

However, in booking this reservation I also realized something else: Latency is the first of four books in the Energy Crisis series. And just like Latency is Sera’s story with five other protagonists along for the ride, the other three novels do the same thing but with other characters. So I could, in theory, have a release party for each book at a restaurant named after the main character of that story! So without further adieu, I’d like to share my plans for my next three release parties.

Fair warning: This will technically be an very, very minor spoiler for the rest of the series, so if you are at all worried about that, now is your chance to close your browser window. I will only be giving away who among the six characters will have the greatest focus put on them, nothing more, nothing less.

The second book is Victor’s story. Putting “Victor” into google maps with a focus on New York City revealed a few options, but the one that caught my eye is a gorgeous Cuban restaurant called Victor’s Café, located in the heart of Midtown. With the cool paintings and plants everywhere, this might be the one place in Manhattan where Victor the character might actually enjoy: https://maps.app.goo.gl/2ppBZZih2VGP5jPv9

The third book is Edgar’s story, and apparently there aren’t nearly as many Edgars in the culinary world as there are Victors and Serafinas. There was one option though, Edgar’s Café on the Upper West Side. Their breakfast menu looks killer, so maybe a brunch release party will be the play for this book: https://maps.app.goo.gl/Qxu2Y8cfmoHb352W6

The fourth book is Nadine’s story, and for this it looks like we will finally have to leave Manhattan (and New York City entirely). The closest “Nadine’s” is an Austrian Restaurant near the border between Westchester and Putnam County. I don’t mind a drive and the outdoor dining space is incredibly charming: https://maps.app.goo.gl/U2GSwzNnBb8JLkMb9

If anyone reading has been to any of these places, I’d love to hear from you, and especially if you’ve read Latency or any of the other upcoming books in the Energy Crisis series. Also, apologies to any Naren and Symon fans out there!

Sera is a LO-EC, a human who gained superpowers as an unintended side effect of a biotechnological breakthrough. Her unique abilities allowed her to survive while others like her, including her parents, were exterminated by a world government fearful of their potential.

After decades of hiding, she meets Naren, another superpowered survivor who has infiltrated the ranks of the military. Together, they form a plan to unite with other surviving LO-ECs, claim vengeance against the forces who murdered their families, and ultimately stoke a worldwide rebellion against the government that wanted them dead.

The entirety of 26th century Earth’s armed forces stand in their way: Soldiers equipped with terrifying weaponry, armies with electromagnetic cannons, merciless bloodthirsty androids, and Spidre, the World Leader with unnatural abilities of his own. The world brought Sera and the other LO-ECs pain and loss, and they’re determined to return it in kind.

Excerpt

Tears welled up in the man’s eye as he nodded in agreement. The three of them left the storage room and walked down to the end of the hall. They swung open the heavy metal door that connected the hallway to the building’s garage. On the other side of the structure, the man and woman could see that the garage’s front door had been completely torn off and thrown into the street. Most of the vehicles were huge electric motorcycles, and many of them were in pieces. The man and woman found two that looked functional in the corner closest to the hole where the front door used to be. The woman straddled one cycle and the man sat the little girl behind her. He then walked over to the other cycle, threw his leg over, and sat down. They grabbed the handlebars at the same time, and the instant their palms made contact with the grips, the engines revved to life and they shot out of the garage.

They were on the road for about ten seconds before a dark shadow briefly covered them and passed over. Two-hundred feet down the street, a metallic grey humanoid figure descended out of the sky and landed with enough force to form snaking cracks around its feet. Even further away, the side of a building erupted outwards, and a far larger and bulkier figure covered in heavy grey armor barreled out to join its comrade. This new giant was flanked closely by a much smaller and skinnier bipedal robotic figure.

“Fly, Sera! Now!” the woman yelled as the lead figure raised its machine-gun-equipped arms and took aim at the cycles. Upon hearing the scream of her name, Sera was no longer seated on the back of the cycle, but was instead flying upwards as if some invisible jet engine had turned on. She was terrified, but remembered what she had to do. She turned to fly away as fast as she could, towards the outskirts of New Orleans, just as the machine guns opened fire on her parents.

About the Author

Nate grew up in Brooklyn NY, but now calls the Bronx home along with his wife and their sons. Nate grew up on all things sci-fi. Partly due to his chronic illness, Nate always had a special place in his heart for the X-Men, and especially the invulnerable Wolverine. This was heavy inspiration for his first novel, Latency a superhero sci-fi story to be released March 5, 2024.
