Sophia, sometimes alternatively known as Mina Van Helsing, is on a mission to kill Murich Rhys. Murich is controlling a city called Absolute Zero (and others?) with a drug called Dream Five, but he’s not the caring, intelligent or benevolent Orwellian overlord he fancies himself to be, and a few rebels who’ve escaped his control want his reign to end. Sophia/Mina must cross a forest, a desert, a mountain, and a river to reach Murich Rhys, and along the way, she’ll encounter all sorts of dangerous beings who’d rather kill her before she reaches her destination, for an assortment of reasons.
This book is a confusing trip! There’s no linear timeline consistency, sometimes we jump into other character POVs, sometimes Sophia knows her own name and sometimes she doesn’t, sometimes she’s in contact with other people she left far behind in a world without modern technology, and sometimes characters who have died appear again. This book will leave you questioning who’s real, who’s under the influence of this drug, and what the drug really is.
I jumped at the chance to review a novella with such an epic title and wasn’t quite prepared for what I was about to read, and I’m not sure what sort of subgenre boxes I would put it in. It’s definitely science fiction, but beyond that I don’t really know. Read this if you want a quick read that’ll leave you wondering what the heck you just read (in a good way!)
