Zeli’s signature pop diva sound and image are nothing short of magical—literally. Her fame comes with hidden costs, a curse that could ruin her voice forever.

Aspiring indie musician, Justin MacKenzie, is determined to kick it to the top of the Rampion Records’ Summer Number One professional vs. amateur singing competition.

The favorite to beat in the annual televised contest is none other than the label’s smoking hot superstar, Zeli, whose crazy extensions flow the length of a football field. Those ridiculous extensions, coupled with her bubblegum brand of pop, are an affront to everything Justin loves about music until a stolen kiss blazes into a romantic encounter.

Once inside Zeli’s world, Justin discovers things are not as they seem. In their quest to allow the real Zeli, to step into the spotlight, the pair must confront the mysterious force behind the dazzle of Rampion’s success. If these star-crossed lovers can’t rally their own magic to defeat the darkness, they will lose everything—including each other.

Excerpt

Justin Time is going for one last B.A.S.E. jump off the Rampion Records Tower before he enters the Summer Number One amateur vs. pro. singing competition…

Using handholds, I climb the sculpture of a giant record needle that leans over the edge of the tower to buy another hundred feet. The Hollywood Sign accepts my salute. Take off in five, four, three, two…

I’m a falling star, soaked in bliss. The pilot chute is free and then my canopy awakens. The chute lines obey my touch. Every vessel thrums with the thrill of the jump.

It is unfettered joy.

Using a zigzag pattern prolongs my fall. I present an offering to the night in a song. “Just in time. Our stars crossed just in time to blaze a path across the moon drenched sky.”

The lights of Hollywood Boulevard are my audience. The song grows big enough to fill the sky.

“My heart wept. Reaching deep for hope.”

A hint of breeze prophesizes triumph with its gentle kiss. No one will beat me. Justin Time will grab the Summer Number One victory with this song.

“To search beyond the clouds–”

“Clouds–”

I snap my mouth closed. My notes aren’t alone.

“For lover’s eyes.” Zeli, a speck in the dark, sings out the open window. Reflections from one of her metallic extensions wrap around her legs like glittering mist. She shares the night song with me.

I sing to the pop star and the stars above. “Destiny–”

She picks it up. “Drew your kiss to touch my wishing lips.”

It’s the woman with the luscious voice, a secret Zeli. Warmth radiates from my heart to my fingertips, and I cross into undiscovered land. Oh, that I were breath drifting across those dear lips so that I might touch them again. Honeyed notes pull me deeper, and I can’t imagine life without them.

I answer. “Magic chased the dark to light our way.”

We sing together.

“Two hearts met just in time, and now our lives entwine. We banished loneliness, found love to stay.”

Our voices blend as if they’ve never been apart. We are the essence of music; harmony, synergy, grace. Our notes are quicksilver shining beneath the moon, the sweet song of lovers who’ve shared but a single kiss.

It isn’t her song anymore or the one I stole.

It’s our song.

My feet tap onto pavement. I hear her. Not Zeli with blocks of extensions that lives in a pink bubble. Not Pop Queen Zeli dripping with Gothel’s sugar coating.

Not Zeli at all.

I’ve found Rapunzel.
