Our Moon Festival is a beautifully illustrated storybook that teaches about various forms of the mid-autumn or moon festival across various Asian countries and cultures, presented as relatives passing on traditions to their youngest family members. This book is sweet, gorgeous, informative, and fun. I can see this book being loved by children of all cultures and valuable in teaching settings.
I do wish a pronunciation guide had been included. I grew up in a host family who took in international students from all over the world but mostly the east Asian countries, so I know what these languages are supposed to sound like, and my English/French/Norwegian reading skills are not producing those sounds when I see some of these transliterated words.
I also wanted to note I was a little surprised when we flipped the page over into the Vietnamese section and suddenly part of the teaching is being done by a blond man named Uncle Keith. It looks like Uncle Keith’s wife is the connection to this Vietnamese family and they and their child are visiting family for the holiday, which is cool and I love the understated representation of interracial families and the importance of keeping heritage alive. I was just a little surprised when the white guy goes on to teach his niece/nephew about their own culture? Didn’t expect that.
About the Author
Yobe is an educator, entrepreneur and mom who lives in NYC. As an educator, she focused on teaching families to embrace love, diversity and different cultures. Through the years working in the classrooms and closely with other educators, she noticed the lack of multi-cultural resources that represented children of color. That is when Yobe decided to create multicultural children stories that feature Asian children, families and cultures! Yobe loves spending time with her daughter, reading to children and taking long walks during the day!
