After her friend Sandy Mangual tragically falls to his death, Bailey Cohen discovers images of his grisly corpse have been uploaded and shared through social media, by someone very close to her.

Fed up, in a stagnant relationship with an emotionally-abusive boyfriend, Bailey enlists the help of quiet, unnoticed, underappreciated Bernardo Castillo, who works the luxury Miami Beach high rise in which she stays.

Bernardo will have to dredge up the shady past he’s long worked to tamp down in order to set off on a journey of vengeance that will reshape and morph each person engulfed along its way.

Icarus Over Collins is a short, punchy revenge story as cracked and slivered as hot Miami pavement.

Excerpt

Bernardo Castillo

Me han agotado. And it’s only Wednesday. More than a year working at Brisas Canarias and I’m finally coming to understand the eccentricities of these gringos. Understanding there’s no pattern to it, because these rich people live a vacation all the time their entire lives. Like tonight. There’s no long weekend. No Jewish holiday. It’s just the beginning of summer and you’d think it was maldito Cuatro de Julio. Americans really love to celebrate their independence day. All day long with the explosions popping off all over the city. I don’t get it. Back home, you hear that many explosions, you go inside.

That anxiety was the reason que me fui de mi bello Cuba in the first place. Bueno, that and Eugenia. I didn’t come to the United States to live like I did back there. I did not leave her behind in vain.

I like the job at Las Brisas; off the books and pays cash, decent cash compared with a lot of people I know working wineries in The Redlands that pay the daily equivalent of a Taco Bell combo meal.

Compared to that, this place is a country club, aunque joden bastante estos gringos. My official title is Maintenance Specialist. That doesn’t stop Schecter from putting me behind the front desk, the valet podium, pressure-washing the sidewalks around the building. Wherever someone is needed, Bernardo, the jack-of-all-trades, fills the void.
