Why is your book a must-read?
Before I get into the topic of the blog post — I have to say thank you to Westveil for having me back as a guest blogger for a third time. They’ve invited me to post, now, for all three novels in the Cardinal Moon Saga, so I was thrilled to see their name on list of those that would like me to contribute! Rising Moon, the finale of the Cardinal Moon Saga, was thrilling for me to write — once I got past my own blocks and ego. I feel that it’s a must read for, at least, those that have read the first two books in the series (and, for those that have read the associated short stories). It really does put a nice little bow on Hugh and Zoie’s story.
Of course, that little bow isn’t achieved easily, and there’s some heartache.
But there’s also some new friends. I truly enjoyed writing Mitzi and Meadow, two sisters with powers to rival the Three Shrews that serve on the Council. I cannot wait for everyone to meet them! Additionally, someone very dear to Zoie’s heart — someone from her past — is introduced, but not everything turns into that happy ending that we’ve become accustomed to.
An old friend tries to make amends for wronging our heroes, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that she will be accepted back into the fold with open arms.
Our characters had left the second book of the series determined to free innocent prisoners, who are confined to a solitary eternity in complete darkness. In the finale, they are lead through a scavenger hunt, in a way, to get the tools they need to achieve their goal. All at the same time, their enemies are keeping a close eye on them, just waiting for the opportunity to end their little game — and transform them into gargoyles to enjoy an eternity of pitch black as punishment for stepping even a toe out of line.
Now, readers of the Cardinal Moon Saga know that I’m not afraid to wipe a character off the page — even a main character or a love interest. So, is that little bow going to be a nice, happy color? Or is it going to be mourning black?

There was no one in the house but Zoie. Hugh had left to handle some Council business, and, while Cade had a key, they didn’t use it unless it was an emergency. She was using the time to catch up on some reading—for pleasure.
Since effectively coming back from the dead, Zoie had been reclassified as a missing person, but there was still some work to be done for her to get her life back. The legal red tape to bring a person back to life was more complicated than any of them had thought it would be. Sure, Hugh had connections that could forge documents, but bringing someone back to life who was never actually dead—nearly impossible in the eyes of the government.
Between researching that and taking action on it, Zoie was also studying magic and practicing and getting better at her skills. It was slow going because, to Zoie’s understanding, because she had let her powers lay dormant for so long, she had to work much harder to get to the level that she would have been at otherwise. No amount of natural skill could make up for practice. But, sometimes, Zoie felt as if she was practicing herself to the point that it was having the opposite effect. It was beginning to feel like a job. A job she didn’t want to do some days.
So between all of that and trying to figure out what she wanted to do with her life, plus balancing a life with Hugh and Silas, Zoie wasn’t left with much time for fun things. So, she was taking this rare time when Hugh was out and Silas was actually with him— and she couldn’t wait to hear how that went for them—to read. She had decided to go back to a simpler time in her life and read a childhood favorite: Anne of Green Gables.
Since Hugh had been technically working two jobs—his role as professor in the English Department and Council Member of the Supernatural World—Zoie had also settled into the role of housewife, and it was another thing that felt like a job that she hated. She had just settled down for another break from her tasks while the laundry was rolling around in the dryer.
Placing the bookmark on the table, Zoie curled up on the couch with her book and a throw blanket. She took a sip of her tea and then turned the page, engrossed in the book to the point that she didn’t even hear the buzzer go off, signaling the end of the cycle.
What did take her out of the book was a loud argument from behind her. It almost made her question her own sanity because she hadn’t noticed anyone entering the house.
About the Author
Katie Groom grew up in rural Pennsylvania, where she received her bachelor’s degree in Business Management from PITT and her master’s in Employment and Labor Relations from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In 2016, she decided to move to Alabama in order to avoid as much snow as possible (and to advance her career in Human Resources).
When she isn’t working, Katie enjoys reading, writing, jokingly critiquing movies and TV, and campaigning that the plural of moose should be meese. She also loves to take in live music (especially Hanson) and traveling, with the goal of reaching each of the continents. Katie’s favorite pastime, however, is spending time with her beloved Shih tzu, Delta.
