Let me be honest and admit that romance is not a genre I seek out. When I spotlighted Blind Spot back in December when it toured with Bewitching Book Tours I didn’t pick it up to review it even though the opportunity was there because I don’t normally pick up romance. And then the excerpt I was given to post left me wanting more and I saw the average 4.41 rating on Goodreads from a not too shabby 30 reviews and over 40 ratings. Sydney sees things. Sometimes she sees things before they happen. Sometimes she touches a person and gets a glimpse of their past. Romance isn’t easy when you know your partner’s deepest, darkest secrets or how they’ll cut things off. Tucker is a dumpster fire walking and he’s here in Syndey’s town trying to hide from it all. Match made in heaven, right?
I loved Syndey’s take-no-BS attitude and her ability to get through to people who are drowning in their own emotions or trauma. She’s relatabe, she’s fun, and her sense of humour about such an inconveniently odd life is refreshing.
Tucker reminds me of the Less Than Jake song The Rest of My Life. In fact, about 45-50% through the book I had to stop and listen to that song! He’s both holding on to the horrors of his past that he’s accepted will haunt him for the rest of his life and yet somehow trying to hide from it and be a different person who didn’t do and experience those things. He’s not at all prepared for Sydney and all the ways she’s going to break down his walls and help him.
I acknowledge that this is a romance and sex scenes are a given, that’s all fine and dandy and I can skim through those. What I wasn’t expecting and didn’t appreciate as a reader stepping out of my comfort zone into a romance novel was how much Tucker sexualized his jalopy of a car, especially when remembering his brother’s car-care lessons. These tend to be character-building or plot revealing scenes so readers who are more here for the mystery and paranormal elements can’t skip over the sexualized bits and not miss key information. Again, I acknowledge this is a romance novel and I am not normally a romance reader, so I won’t fault it too much for this, but I’m stating it for the sake of other readers who may be reading this book for the non-romance facets.
I’d also like to note that early on in the book whenever we were in Tucker’s POV and we weren’t thinking about his demons or sexualizing the car I kept forgetting that we were reading a male character. A few times I had to check that I was in a “him” labelled chapter and we didn’t have a second “her” POV. This problem faded as the book went on, but I can’t quite decide if it’s because Tucker started to sound more masculine or if I just got used to the distinct characters and remembered that Tucker is male.
On the flip side, I LOVED the mystery elements to this book! There’s so much left unsolved and unfinished from Tucker’s past and Sydney’s going to make sure he addresses it. Garret is breaking down the doors of the great beyond and demanding a resolution and Syndey’s going to make sure Tucker answers.
Syndey’s grandmother is absolutely awesome and the best character in the book.
I you like any of the genres this book fits into, give it a try!
