Anne Boleyn
A LONE RAY of light beams into the room and beckons me from a deep slumber. Somewhere in the land of dreams, in a room filled with velvet, fire, and furs, Henry has kissed me; he says that it is for the last time. “Goodbye, my love. Your time has come,” he whispered as he fleetingly kissed my right hand and bowed before me as I awoke. The sun kisses my face now. Henry is gone from me forever. This is my last day on Earth, I hope and pray. Yesterday was enough to drive a person mad. Twice, I prepared for the execution— my execution— only to be told both times that the Swordsman of Calais was not yet available. I wanted so to believe that Henry had changed his mind. I still cling to that hope. Surely our love is beyond misunderstandings and whispered innuendo. I forgive him and believe he shall arrive for me at the last minute. My Prince, my King, my Henry. He will bound upon the scaffold, his stage— oh, how he does love theatrics—at the last moment. He shall tell one and all that such is the punishment for all who defy him, yet explain that this is an exercise of humility for me. An exercise to show that he is a just and noble king who has to teach his wife a lesson. That he listens to no man, only God. He loves me and asks if I will humbly submit to his “lesson.” Yes, I respond with a sweeping curtsy. Then he will take my hand as he has so many
times before and kiss me publicly, as he has so very often. We will laugh and the crowd will join in our theatre.
My Henry, the greatest King in all the world. Looking to the stand beside the bed, I see the spices in the cup of red wine shimmer in the new dawn. It entices me to have a drink. This is the sweetest red wine I have ever tasted. This wine tastes much like the wine served the night Henry and I meet on Shrove Sunday, fourteen years ago.
Even in France, there was not a wine to compare with this. Generally, I only drink ale early and have wine beginning with dinner, but this is almost like a sweet juice. Henry has at least sent me the best of everything since this started a few days ago. Two weeks and five days in the Tower, to be exact.
