Our bodies know exactly how to heal themselves. The problem is that we’ve stopped listening. When our bodies are lethargic, they’re asking for more sleep. Our bodies are asking for more time to rest and recover. Instead, we push ourselves to keep grinding. We give our bodies caffeine instead of sleep. We give our bodies energy drinks and coffee instead of rest.
How do we fix this problem? One day at a time. There is no instant solution or magic pill. Each and every day, we listen to our bodies and honor what we hear, giving our bodies exactly what they need to heal. When we learn to listen, the voice gets louder and louder. We’ll eventually come to find that every answer and every antidote can be found from within.
Throughout my life, I constantly pushed my body beyond its limits. I participated in marathons, triathlons and jiu jitsu competitions despite numerous injuries. At one point in my life, I pushed myself to go to the gym even though I was recently released from the hospital and still recovering from meningitis. I had become so accustomed to silencing my body’s needs to achieve and succeed. Onlookers praised my lifestyle as “determination” and “endurance,” but at its core, my actions were fueled by a lack of self-love and a disregard for my body’s needs. Multiple hospitalizations for life threatening illness didn’t change my ways. Surgeries didn’t slow me down. It was not until I learned to unbury my trauma that I finally learned to love myself and listen to my body.
As we learn to unbury our traumas and honor our bodies, we find more than just answers and cures: we find the divine within.
