When we walk we see things that we would have missed if we drove. Things like birds, cats, & squirrels. When we walk we have fun spending time together. We talk and learn how walking can help to care for our planet. Join Siena and her dad as they walk to school and discover every little step counts.

This is the second book in the Siena’s Stories series. The first book, The Dance of the Snow Tractors, was named a top book for children in the automobile category by Newsweek magazine.

My Review

My Rating: 3.5 Stars
Consider liking my review on Goodreads

I was granted a complimentary ebook copy of Why We Walk by Sienna in exchange for an honest review as part of my participation in a blog tour for this title with Rachel’s Random Resources. Thank you to all involved for affording me this opportunity! My thoughts are my won and my review is honest.

Why We Walk is a story about little Siena and her dad and all the adventures and conversations they have walking to and from school. The illustrations are cute and colourful and I can see this being a particularly loved book for other kids who, like Siena, walk to and from school with their families.

I previously reviewed Siena’s other book The Dance of the Snow Tractors and just like that book, this one doesn’t have much in the way of a traditionally structured plot. It’s a fictionalization of what is undoubtedly real conversations had by author Siena and her father, and it demonstrates how she and her family view the world, but the closest we get to a plot is asking and answering “why we walk” (as opposed to driving or using the school bus.) The answer, by the way, is pollution and how much damage all those others families are doing to the environment by idling in the drop-off line. What concerns me is the feeling that those who can walk to school are doing better than everyone else. Not every family can. Not every city or town is safely walkable. Not every family has a parent available for a long walk twice a day during business hours. Not every family is able-bodied.

About the Author
