Author Guest Post with Misty Mount, The Nanny Song

Posted on January 10, 2022 By Jenna No Comments on Author Guest Post with Misty Mount, The Nanny Song

Mallory Riscoe is no stranger to dysfunction. Despite her tumultuous childhood, at twenty-two, she has established herself as a fully functional, self-made woman. However the safe, mundane life she has created for herself is quickly turned upside-down when she’s falsely accused of theft and promptly fired.

Welcome to one of the January 10th stops on the blog tour for The Nanny Song by Misty Mount with Goddess Fish Promotions. Be sure to follow the rest of the tour for spotlights, reviews, author guest posts & interviews, and a giveaway! More on that at the end of this post.

Author Guest Post

In the final days of the summer of 1993 my doctor said, “That’s the worst case of swimmers’ ear I’ve seen all season.”

My mother just looked at him, confused. “But she hasn’t been swimming at all,” she said. “I can barely get her to come out of her room. All she does is read.”

Me and my sore ears wanted to shrink right out of that examination room. Little did either of them know that I was deep into Rilla of Ingleside—the last book in the Anne of Green Gables series—and that I had read them in almost their entirety while lying with my head back in the bath. I grew up in a large, noisy household and there was something about sinking under the warm, sudsy water that worked like sensory deprivation. All the sounds of my siblings would fade out into the muffled distance and I was free to play out Lucy Maud Montgomery’s words like a movie in my brain.

Other than ear infections, I was destined for neck and shoulder aches, eye strain, and headaches due to my reading habits. Only recently have I been getting relief from this through audiobooks, which are enjoyable but not quite the same “experience” for me. Even so, I think all the aches and pains were worth it to fuel the treasure trove of imagination and escapism I’ve stored in my mind over the years.

What about you? Do you have a favorite reading position or special book nook? One that’s worth a two-week course of antibiotics?

A dismal pall hangs over the Colt residence. Since the death of his wife, Brendan Colt has struggled to care for his children, Kason and Meela. Each is lost in their own deep grief, but there is more to this family than meets the eye.

After her tumultuous childhood, Mallory Riscoe has deftly avoided change. But her life is due for an upheaval when she’s fired from her sales associate position and takes on the role of nanny in the Colt household.

Mallory soon realizes she might have taken on more than she can handle when she finds more than two mischievous children haunting the grand, creaky house. If it isn’t the children’s brash uncle or schoolyard bullies, she finds herself confronted with strange sounds coming from the attic and suspicious late-night behavior from Brendan Colt himself.

It’s only when Mallory begins to feel a connection between not just herself and the children but their father too, that an unspeakable secret is uncovered. Is this new bond—and possibly Mallory’s life itself—now at risk?

Excerpt

Brendan’s gaze flicked over her shoulder for a split second, seeing something that caused his eyes to lose their concerned glow. “We’ll talk later.” He opened the door and suddenly the front hall felt like a freezing wind tunnel.

Before Mallory shut the door, she reached outside and grasped Brendan’s arm, the way he had done to hers. “Be safe out there . . . please.”

Brendan turned back; his eyes narrow against the stinging snow. It seemed to take an eternity before he answered, “I will.”

Mallory pressed hard to shut the door against the gusty air, then stood shivering in the hall. She watched Brendan through the panel window, trudging through the snow, using his boot to clear spots, and briefly checking for toys or debris hiding below. She tried to decipher the fluttery feeling in her chest as he turned the corner and headed alongside the house up to the garage.
