If I Could Be a Character in One of My Books…
A character in one of my books? I’ve already done that. In The Christmas Story, the little boy is named EJ. In many ways, I’m EJ. That book is a love letter to my childhood, when the world felt more innocent than it is today. When it comes down to it, I put a little bit of myself in every single character that I write. That being said, all of my characters are their own individuals. Their unique character traits are what make them special. So why would I change that? I don’t need to necessarily be a character in one of my stories. Even when I don’t agree with the actions of the character I am writing, I can understand that person’s worldview and where they are coming from. I can look at a scene I have written and remember the circumstances in which I wrote. In a way these stories are a sort of weird chronicle of my own life. The Red Fence was inspired by a real-life incident that recently happened to my daughter. She and her husband wanted their fence to be a different color from that of their neighbors. This led to some arguments in the neighborhood. Reality has often been the author of art, and vice versa.

I was granted complimentary access to The Red Fence as part of my participation in a blog tour for this title with iRead Book Tours. Thank you to all involved in affording me this opportunity! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.
The Red Fence is a children’s picture book story in verse about two neighbouring groups of people who just can’t get along and hate each other on principle. It’s a simple little story of learning tolerance and not giving in to prejudice.
This book is both well written and expertly illustrated in the style of Dr. Seuss; so well, in fact, that I’m torn between thinking this is a 5 out of 5 stars little piece of perfection and being very concerned about whether or not the estate of Dr. Seuss will be turning up with a cease and desist. The Bean family father looks like The Lorax and the Grinch had a son (coloured like one and built exactly like the other.)
Overall this is a cute book and I think it would definitely be a great addition to any child’s or classroom library.
About the Author
Born in Newark, New Jersey, Damiano has a passion for creativity, and his stories always contain a positive message. He also wrote The Christmas Blanket, which earned him a Mom’s Choice Award. In The Christmas Blanket, his character EJ realizes the true meaning of Christmas, which is not about getting presents, but about giving back to others.
