The TSS Book Tag (Original, Bookish Version)
(A writerly version is coming soon!) Note that the rules and questions are copied directly from Kiley’s tag document with permission.
- You have a few options of how you ask yourself the questions. Your options are:
- Use a random number generator
- Put the questions on cards and draw from a mug, bowl, etc.
- Have your followers submit the questions they want you to answer
- Got another idea! That’s fine! You do you!
- You can only mention a book one time
- You have to answer at least ten questions (but, hey answer ‘em all if you want! I won’t object!)
- You can’t mention TSC or TSS for any of the prompts. This is TSS inspired, so we already know that both books fit many of the prompts well 😉
- You can only mention books you’re currently reading or have read before

Draw #1 Rosebud – a character you don’t like, but still feel sorry for?
Trapped by Kevin Hearne is the fifth book in the Iron Druid Chronicles, and it’s the first one I plucked off the shelf that mentions Atticus being in trouble with Thor and the rest of the Norse pantheon. Who’s to blame for that? Leif, Atticus’ lawyer, who happens to be an ancient Norse vampire. I hated him more and more as the series progressed, but I do understand his grudge with the god of thunder.

Hounded by Kevin Hearne is book one of the Iron Druid Chronicles, and my absolute favourite side character of all time is ancient Irish druid’s telepathically sassy Irish Wolfhound Oberon.

Draw #3 Traitor – a book that has a traitor/betrayal of some kind
For this one I selected Fool’s Quest by Robin Hobb, which is book two in the Fitz and the Fool trilogy. Beloved (The Fool, Lady Amber) has been tortured within inches of his life for years by his former teachers, mentors, and friends at Clerres. No wonder he wants to see Clerres destroyed at all costs!

Draw #4 Tobleila – all-time favorite book OTP?
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern is one of my all-time favourite stand-alone novels out there, and the relationship between Marco and Celia is one that really warms my heart. These two will stop at nothing to be together.

Draw #5 Dark Fantasy – your favorite subgenre of your favorite genre
I love Science Fiction. Although I’ve come to appreciate and read more fantasy in my adult years, sci-fi is what got me started, so it’ll always be my favourite. I’m particularly intrigued by steampunk sci-fi these days, and more generally I love a good space opera. It’s true, hard sci-fi is what drew me in, but now that I’m here, I’m here for the character-driven plots of space opera!
Draw #6 The Queen of Kovahr – a side character you’d read a whole book about
Defenders of the Dead by Jude Watson is the fifth book in the middle grade Star Wars series Jedi Apprentice. The series follows a young Obiwan Kenobi as Quigon’s young and bull-headed apprentice. Defenders of the Dead is the second book in a two-book plot that takes place on the planet of Melida-Daan. Two warring factions (the Melida and the Daan) have been fighting for so long that no one remembers what they’re fighting for. Living underground and destroying military resources under the cover of darkness are the children of this planet, lead by Melida leader’s daughter Cerasi and Daan leader’s son Nield. I would absolutely read a full length adult novel just about these two characters, and Cerasi in particular!

Draw #7 Big book – the longest book you’ve read and loved
I was a huge fan of buying bind-ups when I was a teenager, so I’m really bad at judging how long certain works are. My copies of The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Universe by Douglas Adams were monsters! Yes, I did have a 5-book Hitchhiker’s Guide bind-up. For this question, though, I pick LotR because it was actually meant to be a single book; it was split up by publishers who didn’t think such a large book would sell.

Draw #8 Cosima – a gorgeous character you hate
Wicked by Gregory Maguire is the first in his series of books about Oz and the true backstories of our favourite characters. No one is truly who we were lead to believe they are, as it turns out, and in this version of the story I hate Glinda (the Good Witch.)

Draw #9 Thessen – a fantasy book with Greece or Rome inspiration
The Mark of the Lion by Francine Rivers is a Christian historical fiction/fantasy series set in ancient Rome, and the POV character for books 1 and 3 is a gladiator. I loved the first book but I never finished the trilogy because I had heard that book 2 was from a different POV, but unskippable due to very important information and events.

Draw #10 Magic – your favorite book that has some form of magic in it
Reserved for the Cat by Mercedes Lackey is her fifth book in the Elemental Masters series. (I’m noticing a trend picking the fifth book…) This was my introduction to Mercedes Lackey, the book that made me look for more in the series and eventually just more by the author in general, so it definitely deserves a mention here. Ninette is a poverty-stricken French ballet dancer who’s on her way to English to dance under the borrowed reputation of Russian ballerina Nina Tchereslavsky. She takes up residence with a pair of magicians who turn out to be real-life, totally legitimate elemental masters (even though the fire mage is also a stage magician.) It turns out she was born into this kind of magic, and her missing father isn’t missing either. He’s trapped in the form of a cat.
