Ben the Dragoncat, who defeated an all-powerful warlock and made history, knows his victory was a complete fluke. After all, warlocks know a lot of magic while Ben has only three tricks…

Fortunately, in times of peace no one seems to mind Ben’s limited power. So long as he avoids using illegal dark magic and behaves the way cats should, he can get along with this world and his dragon just fine.

Alas, everything changes when the warlocks pursue a treasure with the ability to cause a multi-dimensional apocalypse. A desert treasure guarded by a sphinx that seems to be linked to a particularly smelly dog.

If Ben and his motley crew can retrieve the treasure first, then they might just save the day. To do so, Ben will need grace, courage, dragons, and a smattering of magic.

But first, he needs to deal with that dog…

A Cat’s Guide to Questing for Treasure is both a continuation of the fantastic tongue-in-cheek humorous fantasy series we read in the original Dragoncat trilogy and the start to a whole new adventure with an extended group of accomplices. We still have an evil prince trying to take over the dimensions. We still have friends under the control of dark magic. We still have the remainder of the usual crew off on an unapproved mission. Added to the adventure is access to new dimensions, new crystal lore, new majestic felines, and a loyal canine friend who will surely remind all familiar with the film Up! of the goofy golden retriever Dug.

This book is a return to 5-star quality for me, after a slip into 4-star territory in book three when things got a little too dark and chaotic for the overall feel of the series in my opinion. Things are still dark and chaotic, but the right balance of dragon and feline sass has returned, and I found the plot easier to follow. I’m not entirely sure if I’m willing to trust all of the new crew members going into book 5, but this new phase of the adventure promises to be epic, and I’m looking forward to it!

Ben goes through a lot of insightful personal growth in this one, and I love how wise he’s becoming while still maintaining his cat-like quirks and occasionally misunderstanding things that just don’t make sense from a feline point of view.

I love the new lore we get about different dimensions and how the crystals work, and I have to give props for the unique inclusion of Ancient Egyptian mythology without straying too far from the spirit of the original myths.

Dragoncat as a series is certainly not impossible to read out of order, and since this book feels like the start of a new story arc it makes the most sense as a starting point beyond book 1, but be warned that this book does not pause to re-explain lore and plot points already covered in previous books. I still recommend reading these books in order for the best reading experience (though the prequel can be read at any time.)
