When we hear snowy day we imagine sledding, snow angels, and hot chocolate. Siena, who lives in Ottawa, also thinks of dance!

Why? Because, when the snow comes down the plows show up and perform what she calls the Dance of the Snow Tractors.

Join Siena on her porch with a mug of something warm and enjoy the show. You’ll never see snow plows quite the same way again.

My Review

My Rating: 3 Stars
Consider liking my review on Goodreads.

I was granted complimentary access to The Dance of the Snow Tractors in exchange for an honest review as part of my participation in a blog tour for this title with Rachel’s Random Resources. Thank you to all involved in affording me this opportunity! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.

The Dance of the Snow Tractors is told from the point of view of a little girl name Siena who lives in Ottawa, Canada, and she explains what all of the various tractor-category machines involved in snow clearing do in her neighbourhood after big snowstorms. It’s simple and cute with great illustrations and not a lot of text.

There’s absolutely no plot, which seems to be true of roughly half of all picture books of this reading/listening level, so on the surface that’s fine. My criticism is that in 23 pages of actual story/illustrations, the first 16 are just setting the scene. The activity referred to the in the title gets a big title page at page 17 and explained another 4 pages after that (page 21 of 23 story pages.) Describe it more! This book doesn’t seem to be about the dance of the snow tractors; it seems to be about the snow tractors, full stop. The dance part is just the finale.

(Also, as a resident of Newfoundland, I’m seriously wondering about Ottawa’s snow clearing budget. The only times I see more than one large machine snow clearing the same street are when residents with ploughs on their private vehicles and ATVs start helping each other out. And we get a LOT of snow! Look up Snowmageddon 2020.)
