My Review

My Rating: 3 Stars
Consider liking my review on Goodreads.

I was sent a complimentary copy of Sky of Ember by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for the opportunity! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest. This review will be featured on my blog, westveilpublishing.com, started at 6:30am EST on July 6th.

Sky of Embers shows the bones of a great epic fantasy story in the making! James, Chase, and Ulf appear to be demigod variety mystical beings, and their high-stakes adventures keep the world order in balance. The world-building is interesting and the mythology built around these characters is fascinating!

I struggled with the writing style, though. There’s a lot of exposition, a lot of telling that could easily be showing, and a lot of unnatural dialogue. (For example, nobody who’s being corrected stops and says “You are right” without contractions or attitude 5+ times in the same conversation. These felt like verbal nods for the sake of having this character participated in the dialogue.)

I think this author has a lot of great stories to tell, and this book is definitely not something to avoid, but this author needs to work with a developmental editor to smooth the writing out and take it from bullet point outline turned paragraphs into a compelling narrative with dialogue that flows naturally.
