For centuries, Gamekeepers have used their magical abilities to create a buffer between the creatures who dwell in the enchanted forest and the sleepy coastal town that sits in its shadow. When Gamekeeper Stan Ross’s magic begins to fail, he must find out what went wrong, then fix it before the two worlds collide. His hit or miss magic has already led to a few close calls so he journeys to the Sacred Isle searching for answers and advice. Finding a cure proves elusive—until Stan encounters a kitchen witch who captivates him body and soul. Lynnette Peters is healing from her own wounds, however, and it isn’t clear whether she’s ready to open herself to the possibility—or the peril—of love.

Excerpt

Someone was playing a drum, and she felt the vibration of its steady beats reverberate through her body. She felt herself begin to sway in time with the rhythm and felt the soft velvet of the ceremonial robes brush against her skin. An owl hooted from within the wood, bringing her back to herself. She counted a dozen other figures clad in dark robes, bringing the total to thirteen—a sacred number, but an uneven one. Then one of the figures stepped forward and lowered her hood, revealing the unmistakable white hair and silver diadem of the High Priestess.

The High Priestess stood silently, waiting for each of them to focus their attention on her, and then she began to dance. She clapped her hands together, and the sound of it merged with the beat of the drum. The rhythm was slow and measured but there was an intensity that

betrayed something much more primal beneath the surface. As the beat quickened, she began to weave her way around the circle, hips swaying and arms forming graceful arcs as she motioned them to join her in her dance. Lynnette found the drumbeat intoxicating—changing speed and cadence, getting faster and louder then switching back again. As the rhythm changed again, she could feel her blood pumping with the rising tempo, and she gave herself over to the ecstasy of the dance.

When the drum slowed again, she came face to face with a masked stranger. Their eyes locked as they regained focus, and she smiled at him, a little unsteady from the warmth and the whirling. Senses heightened, she could feel the heat rising between them in the cool air, and she smelled the musk of his desire.
