Excerpt
Crossing her arms, Maeve marched up to the table and waited, towering above Sandrine, the shadow of Caspian behind her.
Sandrine’s eyes shot up, and the barest hint of surprise registered on her face, quickly covered by a scowl. Peering past Maeve, she pointed an accusing finger. “Who is he?”
Maeve lifted her chin, eyes narrowed. “I had to hire some help. Due to the nature of our quest, it’s not enough for me to go in alone, without help. I need extra muscle to ensure the safety of our items. I have worked with him before and he will be content to be paid in gold.”
The spoon in Sandrine’s hand clattered on the table, and she shoved the bowl of gruel away. Standing, she yanked up her pack and glared at Maeve. All pretense of friendliness, if it had ever been there, was gone. “Maeve. A private word.” She pointed farther into the inn, toward a staircase hidden in shadows. Then her eyes locked on Caspian’s face, and she sniffed. “Hired muscle indeed. Wait for a moment like a good watchdog while we discuss.”
Maeve flinched at the term: watchdog. How could Caspian stand there and take it? But he played his part well, and not a word left his lips. He sat down at the table, pretending to be dumb, while Maeve followed Sandrine toward the shadows. She glanced back at Caspian, mouthing the word “sorry,” but if he saw his expression did not change.
The rafters above squeaked, and the air smelled musty and moldy. Maeve wrinkled her nose, reminding herself that nothing was worse than the dungeon. Sandrine led her to a corner next to the stairway, which curved upward into gray light.
“Are you daft?” Sandrine scoffed. “What does that man mean to you? Who is he? Because whoever he is, you are giving him a death sentence.”
Maeve leaned away from Sandrine’s bad breath and the rehearsed words came tumbling out, “I told you earlier, I hired him to help. He’s a warrior I’ve worked with before. He’s loyal and does well with a blade, he can follow directions, and as long as he’s paid in gold, he will not interfere with the quest nor try to take the shards for himself.”
Maeve’s thoughts rang as the lies slipped from her lips. They were harder to say than she’d expected, and for a moment her heart quailed. This was dangerous. Should she tell Caspian to run? If he were harmed or even slain because of this quest . . . she shivered and rubbed her arms, suddenly uncomfortable. The situation was terrible, but what else could she do? If she sent him away, he’d likely follow her. For him, there was more at stake than her freedom—he also felt a responsibility, a duty to the world and a calling from the Divine.
Miserable, Maeve looked away from Sandrine’s penetrating gaze.
The scholar clearly did not trust her tale. She humphed and shifted from foot to foot. “You think this is a game, don’t you? You’ve never interacted with the fae. You don’t know what they are like, what they will take from you.”
