Top 5 Favorite Scenes and Why

Adrian meets Hastings – This scene sets up the entire story. It’s pivotal. Finding the right tone and interplay between them was critical, because, let’s face it, a 13-year-old girl in the presence of a 30-year-old man is tricky on many levels. I really love how they interact with each other. It’s very telling.

Adrian meets Sasha-Rae – Their love story is the B plot of the book, and I wanted their introduction to be explosive, yet unexpected. What made this union fun to write has everything to do with Sasha-Rae. Their chemistry together is off the charts, but Sasha-Rae is an accomplished career woman and not your run of the mill fan girl. In other words, watch out Adrian!

Adrian and Mac heart to heart – Near the end of the story is a scene between Adrian and his long-term manager, Mac. Mac knows Adrian on a very intimate, fatherly level, and I loved what this scene revealed for both of them. Men have feelings too but express them in different ways. It’s a poignant, touching scene and I learned a lot about both characters while writing it.

Adrian and Hastings in Toronto – After the band’s second night in Toronto, a fight breaks out amongst the members and Adrian retreats to lick his wounds. Instead of heading to his hotel room, he sneaks into Hastings’ room thinking she’s asleep. She’s not, and the exchange between them in this chapter is very powerful.

Adrian and Exile in Detroit – Exile is the drummer in the band and Adrian’s best friend. They share a very telling and emotional moment together in Detroit. I love how deep their blood ties run. This scene propels the story in the final act.

An iconic rock star with everything to prove. A teen runaway with nothing left to lose. Are you ready for the most unexpected journey?

Adrian ‘Jazzer’ Johnson’s gilded rock and roll career is the stuff of legend. From out of the dive bars of Long Beach, this high school dropout rocketed his band to the pinnacle of success. But after a whirlwind decade ended with him broken and questioning, Adrian disappeared.

Now back on tour after a year in exile, Adrian’s still struggling and under pressure to deliver his next hit. The last thing he needs is to find a teen runaway hiding in his tour bus. As it turns out, Hastings Sinclair is a synesthete who can see music in color. But her offer to help color-blind Adrian unpack his creative block upends their lives in ways they never imagined.

Because Adrian’s troubles run deep—beyond what any song can fix—and Hastings hasn’t been upfront about hers. When calamity strikes, a perfect storm of fates unleashes and caught in the crossfire are Adrian’s band mates, a fame-shy beauty he falls hard for, and a scheming journalist with a vendetta. With everything he values suddenly on the line, can Adrian reconcile his own brash history? Or will he be forced to face the music in a way he never has before?
