Musts Every Story in Your Genre Should Have

First and foremost, tales spun in the fantasy genre must have heaps, piles, loads and mounds of magic…dark magic, deep magic, strong magic, weak magic. There can be magical spells that turn a prince into a toad…or vice-versa, wooden staffs wielded by silver bearded wizards that grant powerful boons, mythological creatures…like silver-coated unicorns that communicate through thought. To build a unique world, the history of these magical elements and laws about how the magic is used is imparted. Magic is so important, my friends…it makes readers believe.

Secondly, a fantasy must have unique, awe-inspiring settings. There can be a realm with a castle topped by gigantic turrets, and surrounded by a crashing sea. Medieval villages filled with unfortunate, ignorant rabble are but a night’s ride away. Beware! To get there a deep dark forest where savage beasts lurk must be crossed. The use of vivid imagery is so important. Who wouldn’t want to live in the snow queen’s lofty mountaintop castle, ringed by starlight and silver mist? Readers love to travel to these strange, highly detailed, unearthly places!

Colorful, complex characters are essential in fantasy: wise elves with jeweled golden hair and long pointy ears, stout dwarves with sharp tongues and thick beards, winged dragons that soar overhead their voices like thunder. The list goes on and on. Characters share their inner thoughts. They whisper little secrets into our willing ears. Sometimes we despise them. Sometimes we fall in love.

Without trouble there is no story. What evil is rising? Who will be fighting whom? Willful characters that squabble, fight, and try to bend their world to fulfill their desires are essential to engage the reader, page after page.

My skin tingles. Arotheon is travelling on a meandering rocky trail through a dank, dark forest. Vast, tangled spiderwebs hang down from the trees, caressing his face like soft fingers. A branch snaps. Large shadows flit by. The little hairs rise up on my arms. Yikes! In fantasy, readers enjoy adventures. They love travelling with fascinating characters to unique places, experiencing both the good and the menaces that lurk.

Fantasies also have themes. Who doesn’t enjoy a good old battle between good and evil?

Finally, power structures are desirable in fantasy. Formidable overlords rule the realm of Ronococo. The evil lords are stealing the Horse People’s crops, starving them. Such a problem! The grim-faced riders mount their powerful steeds and hastily set out. A great bloody battle ensues… The riders proclaim victory. Rainbows fill the sky. Once more, the sun shows its shining face. The world is in balance.

Clara and Angelica Grace have never met ghosts. They’ve never sailed on a tall ship, ridden wild unicorns, or fought with magical weapons. Instead, the teenage twins have a wretched existence, ignored by their troubled parents in a rundown home and tormented by the town’s snobs.

Everything turns topsy-turvy all of a sudden when discovery of an ancestor’s hidden journal with an odd key to an unknown door leads them into an entirely different realm.

The girls go on a thrilling oceanic voyage to search for mysterious whales, train with a seasoned warrior, and are befriended by a wise Master. But all is not a bouquet of lovely lilies…they are hunted by a cunning warlock and must rid themselves of The Warlock’s Curse.

Excerpt

Foulmouth’s crooked maw flew open in shock. The power feeding his evil army had actually failed. The triumphant grins decorating the imps’ hostile faces now woefully sagged in defeat. Their beady coal-black eyes fluttered anxiously as they spotted the bright, eager army of Oceana looming before them. The beasts all cowered, their weapons shaking in their trembling hands, mournful whines and wails showering from their furred throats.

Balanced on a treacherous slope, tiny, armor-clad Arameow raised the Army of Light’s standard—a pyramid with wings—high.

A ray of light beamed down from between the ever-moving shapeless clouds. Glimmering beneath this glowing light, Aomar rose tall upon his unicorn mount. “Let’s vanquish this monstrous rabble now and end this!” he called, mustering his troops.

About the Author

Fascinated by the works of Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, C.B. Oresky began writing her own fantasy novel, The Warlock’s Curse, after dreaming of being whisked off to an alien realm. Besides her debut novel, she has seen four of her short stories published in a small, national literary press: Conceit Magazine. When she’s not writing, she can be found wandering through the  woods, dancing flamenco, or planting flowers in her garden. She currently lives in a small town in Connecticut with her bodybuilder husband, their exceptionally naughty Scottish terrier and Siamese cat, ten chickens, Mr. Tiggy the hedgehog, and a yard filled with majestic flowers.
