What’s Under the Bed…

We’re entering the bed of three school-aged boys, so a mask and a pair of gloves are a good idea.

Atticus Everheart shares a room with his two older brothers. So it’s not a big surprise that several of the lost socks under Atticus’s bed are two times too big for him. There’s also an empty potato chip bag, a soda can, a pair of red boxers (another article of his brother’s clothing), Legos, a magnifying glass, the fingerprint brush from his brother’s detective bag, his skateboard, and the backpack he never leaves home without. Atticus knows about the last two items. There’s also a family of dust bunnies that have been hiding from the vacuum for at least a year now.

A few blocks away, on Tepes Lane, you’ll find Dracul manor and Drago Dracul. Under his bed are empty blood bags, candy wrappers, rubber spiders, a comb, and a bow tie. There’s also a copy of Thirteen Ways to Blend in with Humans, a must-have book according to his grandfather. There is also the glow-bat stuffed animal his mom gave him when he was three and afraid of the dark (Drago will deny ever being scared of such things), and the mouse Drago believes he compelled to leave the manor. The mouse rather likes having the glow-bat there to keep him company.

What would we find under your bed? (Mine has a few dust bunnies—they’re not related to the ones under Atticus’s bed.)

Fearing that’s what they will do if he doesn’t replace the book he accidentally ruined, he takes a job tutoring a boy in his neighborhood.

Although nervous about the job, Atticus soon discovers there’s a lot more in store for him than teaching. Never in a trillion years would he have imagined he’d be hiding from monsters, working with ghosts, or searching for werewolves and witches. He’s not brave, and he has no plans to change.

Until he’s forced to.

Excerpt

It took Atticus eleven minutes to ride his skateboard to 1477 Tepes Lane. It took him two more minutes to find the scarab-shaped buzzer on the massive front gates separating him from his final destination. He ignored how the sky grew darker the closer he got to the manor and the moans escaping the neighboring cemetery and thanked the voice on the other end of the intercom for opening the gates. He then rode up the winding, tree-lined driveway.

A sprawling rubblestone structure with multiple peaks and a round turret greeted him. The house was huge. Bigger than huge, with curtains that rustled in invisible breezes and ivy that grew right before his eyes.

Atticus came to a stop and stepped on the back of his skateboard, causing the front to lift off the ground so he could grab it. He made it up two steps when a rather pained moan snaked into his ear like a tapeworm. Atticus spun around. Nothing was there. Not that he could see, anyway.

He flipped down the monocles on his goggles one at a time, checking for monsters and ghosts. There were none by the trees or in the unruly branches of the thorn bushes in the front yard. He did spot a rabbit dashing away from the house. It seemed harmless enough.

Atticus swiveled on his heels, turning back to the door, and yelped. Two beady red eyes stared back. With a trembling hand, he flipped up the monocle, bursting out laughing when he realized the eyes belonged to a rather ugly door knocker.

“You scared me,” he said, hand over his thumping heart.

He had let his imagination get the better of him. He blamed it on the nightmares he’d had the night before. Each dream had featured his brothers feeding him to a different monster while they read from rare edition novels. In his dreams, his brothers had ripped the clothes Atticus had borrowed without permission from his body, which had become scrawnier with each dream. He’d practically been a stick figure in the last one.

Atticus hurried up the remaining steps into the gloom of the front porch. He dropped his skateboard and helmet near a giant ceramic urn and told the Venus flytraps inside of the container not to eat his things. He quickly smoothed his hair and straightened his vest.

“Look okay?” he asked the bat-shaped door knocker, which of course didn’t reply. He jabbered on. “You’d totally spook Abigail and Evie. They hate furry flying things more than they hate furry crawling things.”

“Its claws could get tangled in my ponytail!” Abigail would scream if she were there.

“It will poop on our heads,” Evie, who’d had a blackbird do this very thing last month, would shriek as she fled the porch.

Atticus chuckled. If he had money left over after buying the book, he’d splurge and get a door knocker to hang on his bedroom door. It would keep his pesky sisters out of his room.

The thought made Atticus quite happy.

About the Author

C.L. Colyer found her love for writing in first grade when her class was sent to the library and asked to find a book for their first book report. While she doesn’t still have this book report, she’s very proud to say she got an A on it. Her favorite thing about the book was that it had no words. That’s right, not one! That gave her the freedom to interpret the pictures in any way she wanted and write her own story.

This sparked her love for writing essays. It wasn’t until she was an adult that she sat down and penned her first novel. This story has a special place in her heart because it’s the story that helped her discover her passion for writing. She has since written several books, many of which may never see the light of day, but all of which helped her learn to combine her passion for writing with her fascination with all things mythical.  You’ll find examples of this in her novels
