Welcome to Fae Academy, where if the Sluagh Sidhe lurking in the woods doesn’t get you, the homework just might…

Maddie Bloom is dreading sophomore year. Not only is her mom’s mysterious illness getting worse, but it’s also a brand-new year of her longtime bully to look forward to. Because who doesn’t love getting swirlies in the newly renovated girls’ bathroom? But then the accident happens. The one where she’s escaping said bully and accidentally summons a magical portal that drops her right into the foyer of a literal castle.

That’s when the big reveals start…

  1. Faeries exist.
  2. Maddie is half-fae. Which is how she ended up in Figstern’s Academy for Excellence, aka Fae Academy.
  3. And Maddie’s uncontrolled magic? It’s slowly poisoning her mom.

When she’s given the chance to stay and learn to control her gifts to save her mom, the choice is clear. But Maddie’s not exactly welcome at Fae Academy. Bullies exist even in the magical world, and don’t get her started on the vindictive hobgoblin or the disgraced prince of the Autumn Court.

Still, not all is what it seems at Fae Academy. And the more Maddie digs, the more secrets she uncovers. Secrets that could threaten her life, her mother’s life, and the future of the fae world itself.

Excerpt

I searched for a friendly face, wanting to ask for the directions again. But expecting a friendly face in this crowd was asking too much. Not to mention, asking one of these overly attractive kids to help me find a toilet because I’d had too much orange juice this morning was a little more than my pride could stand right now.

To the right. I’m pretty sure she said to the right…

I abruptly made the decision to go right, but nerves and misdirection sent me moving left.

Eyeing the third door, I approached and yanked it open.

But it wasn’t a bathroom. It was a closet.

A frustrated sigh bubbled up from my throat. Before I could turn around and try again, I felt a powerful shove from behind. I stumbled forward, into the closet. And before I knew it, the door slammed shut behind me. I was enshrouded in darkness, the strong stench of cleaning supplies stinging my nose.

“Hey!” I reached for the doorknob and gave it a wiggle, but it wouldn’t twist. “No, no, no…” I jiggled the doorknob again to no avail.

Locked. Oh God, not again.

My mouth went dry, and my heart pounded. “Okay, ha, ha. You’ve had your fun,” I yelled, trying to ignore my growing sense of claustrophobia. This reminded me of the time Sam had trapped me in a supply closet in seventh grade. I’d spent three hours in that closet.

And it wasn’t exactly an experience I wanted to repeat.

Balling my fist, I banged at the door. “Let me out!”

Jasmine had warned that the teachers didn’t like when students were late for class. Would they be easy on the new girl, though? I sure hoped so. Granted, it was going to be humiliating if I was asked why I was late. Telling a roomful of magical jerks that someone had locked me in the broom closet wasn’t the first impression I wanted to make.

“Help!” I pounded on the door more frantically, not even caring when my knuckles started to ache.

Why wasn’t anyone coming? Just moments ago, the hallway had been filled with students. It couldn’t have emptied that fast. Someone had to hear me. I collected my breath, preparing to give my loudest scream yet, when suddenly, the door was yanked opened.

Finally, someone had come to my rescue…

Upon seeing who that someone was, though, I quickly began to think I was more than likely looking at the perpetrator.

“It was you.” The accusation left my mouth before I could stop it.

Thorne rolled his eyes, which were honey-colored again. “I didn’t do this. Sage did.”

“Sage?”

“The hobgoblin.” He sounded exasperated, like he was shocked I had no clue who Sage was or what a hobgoblin might be. “He likes to occasionally lock people in this closet because it shifts dimensions.”

“Sage the hobgoblin. Closet shifts dimensions. Sounds about right.” But I blinked, not even bothering to pretend the explanation made sense to me. I stepped forward to exit the closet, but quickly came to a stop for an entirely different reason.

Thorne continued to block my path and made no attempt to move. We stood face-to-face—well, my face to his chest—but our eyes were locked. A jolt of electricity raced through my whole body. And with the way he stared back at me, I was pretty sure he’d felt it, too.

A surprised gleam showed through his pretty brown eyes…

But in a flash, it was gone.

About the Author

Hi, my name is Emily Jenkins. I’m a high school student and wrestle, and I also happen to be the USA National East Coast Jr Teen! After writing a children’s book about bullying in 2020 (Wrestling Girl Takes Down Bullies), I was inspired to keep creating stories—which is how the Maddie Bloom series was born.

In my free time, I love collecting socks, cooking, and sewing clothes for my dog.

He tears them up. It sort of breaks my heart. I sew more.

Yep, it’s a vicious cycle. 😀
