To celebrate the novel’s upcoming release, I’m holding a character symbols tournament biweekly through to late September, right before book launch. Vote for your favourite character symbols in all of the sketch rounds, and the two most voted symbols from each round will go on to the revision round to become fully realized pieces of art.

Week of July 12: Competitors round 1 of 2
Week of July 26: Competitors round 2 of 2
Week of August 9: Leila, Naomi, and the Sisters
Week of August 23: Brontes and the Senators (note that I won’t be doing ALL of them)
Week of September 6: Misc. Palace Staff
Week of September 20: Top 10 designs revision round part 1 of 2
Week of September 27: Top 10 designs revision round part 2 of 2

Round 5: Misc. Palace Staff

Mousumi, Palace Staff

We’re starting with Mousumi, a very strict by-the-book head servant who you will suspect of ulterior motives every time you see her. Are her intentions pure? I’m not telling! To represent Mousumi I’ve chosen a classic set of scales, as frequently used to symbolize law and order.

Cecily, Palace Staff

Next is Cecily, another servant we see frequently throughout the books and TSS in particular. She’s beautiful and sweet, but there’s more to her than meets the eye. I thought this design choice was brilliantly hilarious when I planned this series back in early July, but now I’ve come to realize I can’t possibly give it the explanation it deserves without spoiling some things in TSS, so I’ll just let you speculate. Cecily’s symbol is a glamorous donkey.

Talos, Slave Muscle

Third we have Talos, the imprisoned master of torture who Leila loves like an uncle and often seeks his counsel. He was one of the champions selected for release in her mother’s tournament, and he loved her mother dearly. Unfortunately for Talos his rival, Sovereign Brontes, is the vindictive sort, and Talos has never been a free man since his release. For Talos I decided to draw a large dog, specifically modelled after a pitbull, guarding a small kitten. He can cause serious harm if his handlers wish, and wish it they do, but all he really wants is peace and love, and he’ll protect Leila with everything he has.

Faun & Nyx, Palace Staff

Fourth and Fifth are twin servants Faun and Nyx. I decided to draw a faun’s face surrounded by flowers for Faun, and then realized that the most appropriate thing to do for Nyx would be to take the same symbol and make it darker. Nyx, after all, is the name of the goddess of night.

Asher, Leila’s Guard

Finally we have Asher, the beautiful airhead sworn to guard Leila’s bed chamber door. His youthful inexperience means he fails at times, though he insists that he’s loyal to Leila first and foremost, and strives never to make the same mistakes twice. For Asher I’ve drawn a rabbit wielding a sword.

Cast Your Votes Now!

Remember, the two symbols with the most votes from each round move on to the revision round, where I will create 10 fully realized pieces of art. Vote in this poll (you can come back and vote daily if you wish) and get more votes in by commenting on YouTube and visiting my posts for this round on my social media platforms.

Voting on all rounds closes at the end of the day on September 17, 2020, so that I have time to create the winning 10 pieces.
