Imani Stone has a secret—she possesses an ancestral power to bend starlight.

Having grown up in the lush, magical hills surrounding the ancient city of Lumenor, she is no stranger to star-gazing, potion-making, or tarot-reading. However, in the time of civil war in her city, Imani must hide her power to avoid being recruited by the queen’s legions or killed by the ruthless rebels. But everything changes once the city learns of an incoming army of warriors threatening to destroy Lumenor and steal their starlight crystal. Imani is met with a choice—remain in hiding and help her family or risk everything and join the queen’s legions.

But does she have what it takes to be a legionnaire?

Can she help save Lumenor, or will she be the cause of its demise?

Excerpt

With only one breath to spare, I stopped running and turned back. My thighs were throbbing. The cool evening air chilled my chest. The warmth of starlight within me had vanished. Aubren’s quick feet pounded against the hill before he reappeared within arm’s reach.

“I’ve never harmed another person in my entire life! I am not your enemy,” I shouted.

He scoffed, piercing me with a pointed stare. “And I am not a fool, starlight bender.”

I rolled my eyes. “What are you going to fight the Akani with? Sticks, stones and blades? They have an ancient crystal in their possession for Kirrah’s sake!”

Moons help me if anyone has ever managed to reason with a rebel!

“Won’t make much difference to you.” Aubren’s cold smile spread his lips wide again. “You won’t be there to see it.”

I swallowed, attempting to reason with him one last time. “I thought that you liked me, I thought that we could be friends!”

A one-sided smirk flashed across his lips, fueled with contempt. “I don’t make friends with your kind.”

Can’t say I didn’t try.

My fingers split apart like the petals of a blooming flower. Feeling my connection to the black skies above that shimmered with flecks of gold and silver, I opened my chest wide and drew on my power. All matter was created from stardust, but it was starlight that breathed life into our world.

And I had the power to summon it at my fingertips.
