Back in the Bronze Age, Angus McCraggan sacrificed his life to break the Celtic curse laid on his kind. He failed. Millennia later, he returns to modern Ireland to find his people have become feral, vengeful shadows. With his hollow hill now packed with tourists, he uses his power to keep his past hidden.

Until an American calls him out.

Since a banshee attacked her as a teen, Erin De Santos has been tormented by dreams of a boy she’s never met. Armed with a new identity, she returns to the Emerald Isle determined to face her nightmare. But her discovery turns fatal.

When the banshee strikes again, Angus surrenders his heart—and his hope of freeing his people—to save her. With his life now hers and his curse descending, Erin must make a terrible choice: kill her savior or share his doom.

Excerpt

“My people and I are long past our due dates. Perhaps it’s as well they are left as they are, unaware I have failed.”

Despite his philosophical words, his torment was obvious in the hunch of his shoulders, the tightened ridges of his stomach and the pained lines around his mouth. Being the sole survivor gutted him.

“I saw you in Newgrange in all your shining glory. You’re a god, McCraggan. What’s stopping you bringing them back?”

“If I’m a god, I’m no more than a local one. To lead them into the light, I must be greater. I must be Chief and that is no longer possible.”

“Why?”

Angus spoke slowly, each word dropping from his lips like a jewel. “A Chief gives his heart to his Lady so he cannot help but love her, and I have given my heart to you.”

That same heart rapped against ribs suddenly too tight. Or else his heart was too big. Whichever, it didn’t fit, and her chest ached with the pressure. It had to go.

“It’s not that I’m ungrateful, but it can’t be good for you, McCraggan, me having your heart. I already give my stepdad angina. There must be some way I can re- gift or return it, or get a transplant, or whatever.”

“I’m aware you had no choice in receiving my gift, but it was freely given.” He put his back to her as he spoke. Between the defined lines of muscles, the fist- sized bruise glared. “When Caer attacked, my sole concern was to save you. It never occurred to me you would object.”

He spun on his heel to face her. “Last night I rejected Caer in the full knowledge she still loves me, cannot help but love me, even after all this time. Do the same to me and we are done.”

Erin’s vision narrowed to lock onto the white bandage in the center of his chest while the jigsaw pieces of everything he’d told her resolved into an I-love-you- to-death nightmare. This wasn’t some drunken Vegas married-by-Elvis scenario they could walk away from, both feeling a little foolish but made a lot wiser. Oh, no. He couldn’t help but love her because he was enchanted.

I really love wildflowers, especially blue and purple ones. In Ireland, cornflowers, bluebells, flax, violets and love-in-a-mist. In Australia, my favourite would be Lechenaultia. (Look it up, it’s very pretty!)

Good evening, Kat. Were there any aspects of your story that required much research?

Luckily, I lived near Newgrange for years so know the area there well. I also have friends who are still tourguides there and that gave me some special insights. That said, I researched across SO MANY BOOKS. The original Irish myths were written down by monks in the Middle Ages and there are lots of variations in translation. I’ve also relied on the more recent findings from archaeology that have confirmed a lot of the mythology.
