My Review

My Rating: 4 Stars
Consider liking my review on Goodreads

I was granted complimentary access to The Great, Messy, Multicoloured, Monstrous, Yarn Monster by Andrea Pukteris as part of my participation in a blog tour for this title with Goddess Fish Promotions. Than you to all involved in affording me this opportunity! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.

Owen comes home looking for his grandmother only to find a huge, colourful mess! What happened?

This is a cute little kid-appropriate mystery with bright, fun illustrations. I can see this story being great in a class setting where the teacher can ask the class for predictions each page and really have a lot of fun.

The layout is a bit like a comic book or graphic novel for some pages and a standard picture book for others, which is interesting, but it does mean young readers trying to tackle this for themselves need to understand how panelled stories flow. Kids who haven’t seen a book presenting in this sort of format before should probably read it with an adult first, just to see how it’s done.

My only real critique is that the amount of words per page is very inconsistent, which may deter some readers, and the pannels that are just a block of white text on a coloured background aren’t the easiest on the eyes.

Overall this is a very cute book! Guided and independent readers ages 6-9 will probably love this book, and even younger kids will be entertained by this story as a read-aloud.

About the Author

Andrea Pukteris has a big imagination, and sometimes it gets her into trouble. Sometimes she writes books about it instead. Andrea lives in Montreal with her partner, two kids, a dog, a bird and the many monsters they create. Check out her other adventures at www.rockamoly.com.
