Interview with Curtis Honeycutt
What inspired you to start officially writing a book?
I listened to John August’s “Launch” podcast in which August writes the first book in his Arlo Finch series. He walked through his book-writing process, which does read like a publishing fairy tale. He does a great job of letting people know that his results aren’t typical. This podcast is incredibly inspiring for someone who wants a nudge in the right direction.
Who is someone who has influenced you in your writing?
I had a creative writing teacher (Mrs. Richardson) in high school who always encouraged me to enter writing contests. She would say, “You’ll never win a contest that you don’t enter.” Because of her philosophy, I’ve put myself out there quite a bit with writing, sending my work out to newspaper editors and publishers without fear of rejection.
What is your least favorite word?
“Moist.” I wrote a mini-section in the book about people’s least favorite words along with people’s favorite-sounding words. I find the word “moist” to be the ickiest…although “supple” would have to be a strong second place.
Who is the coolest person who recommended your book?
I love Cathy Heller (author and podcaster of “Don’t Keep Your Day Job”). She was kind enough to write an endorsement for my book. She wrote: “Honeycutt’s approach to grammar is hilarious and refreshing. Everyone can improve their grammar by reading this book.” I also received blurbs from many of my newspaper editors from all around the country.
How did you publish your book?
I have an agent who loved my book, but couldn’t find a traditional publisher for it. So, I started my own publishing company just to publish my book! It’s called The County Publishing—“The County” is an anagram for “Honeycutt.” I created it as an LLC so it’s a real, official publishing company. I paid a brilliant artist friend of mine to design the cover and hired my retired AP English teacher to edit the book.
What is your next project?
I want to write a humorous novel about a character who joins a cult in order to expose it as a fraud. The whole idea came from writing a book that I could label as a “cult comedy.”
