Excerpt

PARIS, FRANCE.
PLACE DE LA REVOLUTION, 1789

Lilly did not cry out as she was led to the guillotine.

She was shivering in the early morning air, her hands were tied behind her back, her heart was pounding, but she did not make a sound as the executioner cut off her hair with a large pair of shears, and then strapped her into the grotesque machine that would sever her head.

Lilly tried to block out the sound of the raucous, blood-thirsty crowd that had filled the enormous public square. She knew they filled Place de la Revolution each day, eager to see aristocrats lose their heads, eager to see blood gush from the necks of decapitated bodies. Lilly tried to block out the terrible noise but she could not – the sound was overwhelming, thousands of people screaming for blood.

Suddenly, Lilly heard a sharp “click” as the executioner pressed a lever and released the guillotine’s heavy, weighted, razor-sharp blade.

It was the end. There was no hope. She would be dead in a matter of seconds.

Lilly shut her eyes and prayed as the monstrous crowd screamed, and the guillotine’s heavy blade hurtled towards her neck…
