Bronwyn had never been a fan of eating in the kitchen. To her, it felt like something poor people do, because they don’t have enough furniture. She much preferred a more formal setting, either the breakfast table, or the dining room in the evenings. However, since baby Serena seemed happiest in the kitchen sink, Bronwyn had the chef prepare tea and finger sandwiches, served at the large marble island. Bronwyn took a seat on a barstool and watched the baby as she floated in the water.

“Mom?” Harper shouted, as she cracked open the front door. “We’re in the kitchen, Harpie.”

Harper took her time walking in. She knew that this was one of those rare moments in life that would leave a notch on the timeline: before and after Mermaid Langley. She pushed the kitchen’s swinging door and took a step into an uncertain future.

Naturally, Serena’s golden tail was the first thing Harper saw. It was ridged and delicate, wispy at the ends, like a dandelion blowing in the wind. The human half of the child looked remarkably like Harper herself, light blonde hair and big blue eyes. Harper had expected to feel disgust, but there wasn’t an ounce of derision when she looked at this tiny being. On the contrary, Harper felt that she could stand in place forever, staring at her niece. The child was a thing of beauty and grace.

“Do you want to hold her?” Bronwyn asked. “I can take her out of the water.”

“No, no… don’t bother her. She looks so relaxed.”

“She loves the sink.”

“What do you do with her at night?”

Bronwyn hid her face in her hands. “I can’t even say it.”

Harper turned her eyes toward her mother. “Mom, what? Say it.” “Do you remember that pedicure tub your father got me for

Christmas a few years ago?”

“Of course,” Harper laughed. “You were mad at him for weeks for buying that. He has no talent for gift giving.”

“Well, I found a use for it,” Bronwyn admitted, her voice thick. “I fill it up with saline water and put it next to my side of the bed, and that’s where the baby sleeps. I’m still afraid she’s going to drown.”

Harper snorted, picturing the scene. “I don’t think that’s possible, Mom.”

“Well, how would I know?” Bronwyn snapped. “The truth is I am absolutely exhausted.”

“Don’t you have a night nurse?”

“I don’t feel comfortable leaving her alone with anyone right now. What if someone took her?”

Harper sat down next to her mother. “You look terrible. Why don’t you lie down while I watch her?”

Bronwyn’s eyes glistened. “Would you, darling? Would you, please? There is nothing I would love more than a hot bath and an hour to myself.”

“Of course.”

“Oh, Harper!” Bronwyn wrapped her arms around her daughter. “I’m so glad you’re here. I’ve missed you. I really have, my darling.”

Harper wasn’t used to this level of affection from her mother, and she resisted the urge to return the hug. “Mmm,” Harper hummed, peeling herself away, “you got it!”

Bronwyn tickled Serena’s cheek and then slipped out the door.

Harper rose from her chair and looked around, to make sure she was really alone with Serena.

“Kiddo,” she said, “it’s just you and me.”

Harper slipped her hand into her purse and snuck her phone out, flicking the camera to video mode. “Auntie Harper loves you. Now, sweetie, smile for the camera.”
